Autumn Plaid

Today I will share an example of what to look for in patterns depending on your season. Plaid has always been a hot pattern for fall/winter. Something about it just invokes coziness.

The 5 plaid items at the top are what Springs and Autumns should look for, color-wise. The main color in these items are either yellow, tan, olive green, or ivory. If you are a Spring or Autumn, you should always make sure that the dominating color (for plaid it’s usually going to be the background color) is warm. Springs look best in the lighter warms like the tans and ivories while Autumns look best in the yellows and olive greens. Also, notice that the coat at the top is yellow and black plaid. Black is not an autumn color. However, the yellow sufficiently overpowers the black in this pattern to where it will read as ‘warm’ when it is worn.

The 5 plaid items at the bottom are what Summers and Winters should look for, color-wise. The main color in these items are either blue, pink, red, or turquoise. If you are a Summer or Winter, you should always make sure that the dominating color (for plaid it’s usually going to be the background color) is cool. Summers look best in the lighter cools like the paler pinks and turquoises while Winters look best in the reds and more vibrant blues (though you can also pull off turquoise effectively).

Mustard Dress from Ruche

Hi guys! I’m still working on the Giveaway packages for the winners; they should be sent out this week for the ones who have responded.

This is not a style blog. I focus on colors and you can feel free to do your own style. But, if I see something that I think is cute for myself or others, I’ll start posting here. If you don’t like the style, hopefully you can at least take something away from the color featured.

I ordered this dress from Shop Ruche a few weeks ago. It fits beautifully and the color is gorgeous! This color (and/or dress) would be a perfect spring/summer/late summer dress for Autumns and Springs. It’s the perfect shade of yellow to make warmer-toned skin glow; not too garish and not too pastel.

QQ in Stripes

Just a quick drive-by post to show how to do patterns in your season.

QQ, you may remember, is an Autumn. Here she is in a cream top with brown, orange, and peachy stripes and has accented with gold jewelry. This pattern is classic warm since every color featured is warm. This top would work for Autumns AND Springs since it has a mix of lighter and darker warm colors.

Thanks QQ!

True Blood Week: Arlene

Welcome back to True Blood Week at Glowing Color! To wrap up the series, we have Arlene, aka Carrie Preston.

Hopefully none of you thought that was her natural hair color. Carrie Preston’s natural hair color is blonde. Seems to be a pattern with blondes going red huh? So of course, that eliminates Autumn and Winter as possible seasons for Carrie. Carrie had slightly more photos of her in warm colors than cool colors so we’ll look at warm first.

Carrie looks good in these warm colors, but one thing I notice is that most of the photos are bold/dark warm; meaning she wears a lot of colors that Autumns look good in. However, if you look at the last photo of her in pink, a Spring color, she looks fresh, soft, and pretty. Sometimes people can wear colors in their parallel season (Autumn wearing Spring and vice-versa, Winter wearing Summer and vice-versa) but some people look best in their own season, period. It looks like Carrie might be one of the latter. Let’s look at her in the cooler photos.

The silver-gray is wearing her. She looks clammy in white. The red hair and blue dress look striking against each other, but focus on CARRIE. Not flattering for her skin tone. The black is just sitting on her. So it definitely appears Carrie is a warm season…Carrie is a Spring. If she includes more of the lighter/softer warm colors instead of the bright/deep/bold warm colors, she’d be winning on all of you hoes.

That concludes True Blood Week at Glowing Color! Stay tuned for a giveaway announcement on Monday and reader submissions the rest of the week!

True Blood Week: Pam

Welcome back to Wednesday of True Blood Week at Glowing Color! This time, we’re going to look at Pam, aka Kristin Bauer.

It appears Kristin favors dressing in cool colors most frequently, so we’ll look at her in those first. By the way, Kristin is a natural blonde which rules out Autumn and Winter for her seasons.

Not looking so hot, right? Kristin’s skin looks tired and washed out in the cool colors of fuschia, white, lavender, black, blue, and pure red. The floral-patterned dress she is wearing is primarily black and white. It’s definitely looking like Kristin is not a Summer. As for photos of Kristin in warm colors, there were barely any to choose from. The 2 photos I found of her in warm AND pale colors (be-fitting the Spring season) show a big difference.

See? The champagne photo on the right is a little far away, but I’m willing to bet she would look stunning in a close-up of that color. The pink photo on the left though? Major difference. It could stand to be a little pinker, a little more blush, but it’s still a vast improvement. Also, go back to the photo of her in clear red. Look at her lipstick. THAT is the kind of red warm seasons can wear and shine in. A more muted, tomato red would look fantastic on Kristin. Kristin is a Spring, and it doesn’t look like she knows it! Pam, girl, go get some Spring colors and fix this!

The Young Women of Harry Potter

In honor of the final Harry Potter Film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows making its debut in the States, today’s post is dedicated to the three main young women who starred in the film.

Emma Watson (Hermione) is a Spring

Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) is a Summer

Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) is an Autumn

Vanessa Williams

I got a comment on my Summer post inquiring about Vanessa Williams. Ann asked whether Vanessa would be considered a Summer. Though Vanessa’s hair is a light brown/auburn, I don’t believe it’s light enough to be considered a Summer. Let’s take a looksie.

Here are a few photos of Vanessa in summer colors:

The aqua is screaming at you about paying bills and why can't you be more like your sister?

while this green brings out her eyes, overall it makes her skin look a little sallow and is just sitting on her. The gold jewelry helps save the look.

Vanessa has a tan here and still looks washed out with the white.

So overall, no bueno for Summer colors. Vanessa is not a Summer. As I mentioned earlier, I don’t think her hair is light enough for Spring either, but just for ruling-out sake:

Nope. Washed the fuck out.

She is washed out here, but at the same time she doesn't look bad. This indicates that she may have a warm undertone but needs more vibrant color.

Vanessa is not a Spring. The champagne color is giving us a hint, however, of her skin tone.

Let’s move on to the “darker” seasons. Here is Vanessa in some Winter colors:

The black is making her tan look orange, not glow-y.

Blah.

Welp, that leaves one more season.

Vanessa in Autumn:

Ignore the "I may have just sharted" look on her face. Things are looking warmer!

Golden Goddess...looking good!

motherf****** radiant!

I think we have a winner here. Vanessa Williams is an Autumn. To directly answer commenter Ann: Vanessa’s hair/coloring is not light/blonde enough to be a Summer (and spring by association), and more importantly, she has a warm skin undertone, not the cool undertone you would need to be a Summer.

Until next time!

Christina Hendricks

Mad Men is one of my favorite shows, and Joan, played by Christina Hendricks, is one of my favorite characters. Christina is a drop-dead gorgeous woman but whenever I read celeb news and see her in magazines or at award shows, she often looks like death warmed over. I blame her stylist for this. It seems like everyone wants to accentuate her bewbs and they don’t pay attention to how SHE looks overall. She’s often dressed in cool jewel tones, hideous cool pastels, or black. She would look STUNNING if she wore colors to suit her tone. Most people would assume she is a textbook Autumn, due to her red hair but WRONG. Christina is actually a natural blonde and based on her coloring I would say she’s a Spring. Most of the colors she wears out fall under the Autumn or Winter category (overwhelmingly Winter). Autumn and Spring are both warm seasons, but Autumn can get away with bolder colors than Spring, and Spring can get away with softer colors than Autumn. This explains why, even when wearing Autumn colors as a “redhead”, something still looks off about her. Let’s take a look at some evidence shall we?

Christina in cool colors

If this heffa don’t look like slightly defrosted death in these pictures, I don’t know what…..All of these colors are either too dark/bold or too cool. Unfortunately, these types of colors are what she’s most often seen wearing.

Christina in Autumn colors

These pictures were my first clue that something was a bit off when trying to categorize Christina as an Autumn. She CLEARLY is not a Winter (nor Summer), and after these pics I concluded she’s definitely not an Autumn. These colors definitely look better on her than the cool colors above, but she’s still not really glowing like she could be. Navy and burgundy can work for Autumns or Winters and she looks okay in these colors but not stunning. The red she’s in is a telltale Autumn red. If she hit that one out the park, she’d be an Autumn. While she does look pretty here, the red is still not getting too crunk with her skin tone.

Christina in Spring colors

To me, Christina looks the best in these colors than anything else I’ve seen her in. She looks softer, glowy, fresh, ALIVE. Now in your mind, replace her red hair in these pictures with blonde. The effect would be perfect if she returned to her natural blonde color. Blonde is the best hair color base to start from when you want to go red because it looks more natural (compared to going red from a dark brown or black hair color), hence why many have no idea that isn’t her actual hair color. I’ve always been fascinated by red hair though for some reason, and I can usually tell if it’s natural, completely fake, or enhanced. Which is why even in the warmer colors, Christina often just looks….off. When the hair color, your skin tone, and the color of your outfit come together, hoes can’t tell you ANYTHING. Hopefully she’ll get it right more often in the future.

In conclusion, Christina Hendricks is a Spring who makes people think she’s an Autumn who wears Winter and Summer colors. Lawd.

**Update**
As I was going through my Google Reader, I saw a post on Celebitchy about Christina covering the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The post mentions that stylists have no idea what to do with a pale, busty, redhead. I agree and would add to that who’s-natural-hair-color-is-really-blonde. She looks pretty on the cover, but the color and the other photos…she just looks off.

Spring

Spring people are those with warm skin undertones and light hair. Light, airy, and muted warm colors makes Spring people glow. Excerpts from Beauty and the Bath (the bold print emphasizes what I believe are good points to remember; italics are my own notes):

The best white for a spring is ivory, a creamy tone, or an off-white. Beiges that are clear and warm, from light beige to camel.

Your browns start at the golden tan and can go as dark as milk chocolate, any golden brown is good but be careful not to go to deep or too dark. Golds from buff to golden yellow, on the bright clear side.

For gray only a warm yellow shade is flattering to a spring skin tone and choose a lighter shade if wearing near your face. (Yes, there are warm grays. More on this in a different post.)

Peach, apricot, salmon, coral, and peachy pinks are beautiful for a spring season.

Aqua and clear turquoise are extremely flattering for you as well as periwinkle blue, light true blue

Light to medium violet are vibrant on you, if you choose a periwinkle shade of blue which has more violet in it rather than a pale powder blue, it is much more vibrant on you.

Any light orange, bright coral, and orange-red look good, choose clear reds but not those that have a blue undertone. (Choosing the right red is important for seasons. More in a different post.)

A very fair spring should avoid a dark black and all springs should avoid a pure white.

Spring Women in the Media

Model Jasmine Sanders is the only black (or black-multiracial) female Spring in the media I have seen so far. I will add others as I find them.
